As of now, my traffic rank is 4,273,634!! This might not be a very good figure, but you must understand that when I first started, the ranking was a far cry from now. When, I check the website, my website did not have a ranking.. boo hoo. Then later, it had a ranking of 11 million something. That's 11,000,000+++. Its a little depressing. However, recently, the ranking jumped again, to 4,273,634! This is why this lousy rank still makes me very happy!



What is Alexa traffic rank?
Alexa is probably one of the better ranking sites on the web. You will get a ranking when either you submit your site to alexa.com or waits for it to crawl you.

Having said that, still it would not be a totally accurate gauge as it only collects information from people who has the alexa toolbar installed on their browser. So, those that are not supported would not have their visits counted. The only supported browsers are Firefox and Internet Explorer. However, I think it is still a good estimate of how you rank among your competitors in terms of traffic.

The rankings are from number one to tens of millions. Usually, it stops at around 4 million, while the rest would have no data or really low traffic. It reads by rank one being the top sites and so on, so the lower the rank, the better. As you are starting, its best to give it a few months before you can take the results more seriously as it becomes more accurate. Usually sites which are quite active would be in the hundred thousands zone, while the better sites with regular visitors would be in the thousands zone. If your ranking is like mine, yours is probably a new website.

Alexa also has a graph for the traffic of websites. This can be useful when you want to compare the traffic of your site and your competitors. For example, if your are having a campaign, you will be able to see a spike in your traffic. If your competitor has one too, you will know who is more effective by looking at the steepness of the spike.

It also allows you to keep track of the current trends of the websites people are visiting and also the topics of websites which people frequent. If you are starting a blog to earn money, but do not know what subject to blog on, you may want to take a look..

The trouble with alexa is that its ranking is current, so the moment visitors stop going to your site, your ranking would drop, as others climb over you. So the best way, is to keep the traffic coming, in your own ways. Only in the long run, will the ranking then be more or less stablized.

So is there anyway to cheat alexa?
Unfortunately, yes. As the traffic ranking is collected from its toolbar, you simply target those people who have it installed. Try promoting your sites to Asians forums, maybe HongKong or China. Alexa seems to be more popular in Asia. Another way is to ask tens of your friends to install alexa toolbar on their computers and visit your website everyday. Most likely your ranking would skyrocket for a while. Alexa would register the data blindly..
