These days, libraries are becoming more and more popular in Singapore. The government has really succeeded in transforming the concept of the library. In the past, library is viewed as a place for research and for those more advance in their studies. There was only one library that I can think of, the National Library. However, now almost every corner there would exist one, be it big or small. Libraries are now social places where families hang out on weekends, students study and spend their day after school and also a learning place for kids. Knowledge is no longer available only to the cream of the crop of the country but to the entire population down to the bottom. The ground floor. A cafe exist here, with exhibition and magazine section. This has roughly been the effective of all community libraries.
The 2nd storey. The reference section with Singapore collection. There is also a Audio/ visual(AV) section here.
Instead of stairs, a ramp is used to access the 2nd storey. It gives a sense of openness, looking up, one can see the colorful pods.
Looking back down the ramp.
The 3rd storey. The general collection section.
Here the cupboards are about 1.8m, looking up over them, the grooves or lines make the hall look expansive and more spacious.
There is also a quiet reading room in placed here. A room common in libraries, a room with minimal noise.
The 4th storey, highest floor. The fiction section. For youngsters. The tone here is more relaxed and funishings are also different from before.

The image of library had a total revamp. Now libraries are look and feel refreshing. No longer a place where old, thick manuals are kept, it now looks modern and contemporary. People go there seeking information which are current and varied. This particular one is the Bishan Community Library and has been awarded the design of the year, 2007.
Bishan Library at night with its pods. These have the function of providing some isolation for readers. People will feel that they have their own personal space and distractions like others walking around are effective cut to the minimal. Their concentration thus are increased.
